So often dogs help people through their darkest hours, whether it is guiding the blind, watching over the young, or supporting those who are sick – those with cancer. Area canines, with owners in tow, take to the track this summer as part of the American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life event to dig up a cure for cancer.
Bark For Life adds a twist to the Society’s traditional Relay For Life, serving as a fundraising activity to honor the care-giving qualities of canine companions while supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society.
Come out on Sunday, May 20, 2012, to the Harley Davidson in Valparaiso for a motorcycle ride in memory of Bonnie Bartz. Registration begins at 9:30 am, with the bikes leaving at 11:00 am. The run ends at American Legion Post 261 in Cedar Lake.
Entry fees are $25 per rider or $35 for a rider and passenger. The fees include a buffet meal after the ride.

This year's Spring Caregiver Conference hosted by the Alzheimer's Association will be held Thursday, June 14, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (CST), at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center, 3550 East US Route 30, Merrillville, IN 46410. The conference is designed for professional caregivers and family members of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The featured speaker will present on how to deal with behaviors exhibited by confused individuals.
Dealing with these behaviors requires an understanding of motivation, a desire to learn who the person really is, the drive to find out what they want to do, and the willingness to help them get it done.
Fresh from a successful showing in international competition, the first-year Michigan City Wild Wild Wolves 3936 student robotics team was rewarded with a visit to Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Michigan City on May 10, during which members received a hands-on lesson in operation of the da Vinci Si Surgical System robot.
Kurt Klepsch, a representative of California-based Intuitive Surgical Inc., which manufactures the robot, explained and demonstrated its functions to seven team members who were among those who recently competed among 600 teams from 32 countries in a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology International Championship event in St. Louis. Their entry was called Firehawk. The team earned the right to compete there after earning an All-Star Rookie Team Award in previous competition.
